How chiropractic helps

The pebble in your shoe.

A simple way to think about pain, pressure and the nervous system, and where chiropractic care fits in.

Three kinds of stress

Physical, chemical, or emotional.

Health problems can be physical, chemical or emotional in nature, and they often overlap. Most people understand how emotional stress can contribute to health problems, and that when the body’s chemistry is off, you can feel unwell.

What many people don’t think about is how often a problem starts with something physical. That’s the part chiropractic care looks at.

An everyday example

Take the pebble out, and the pain goes.

Try it

A pebble in your shoe: pressure on a nerve.

You feel pain because the pebble presses on a nerve that carries pain. It isn’t chemical or emotional; the cause is physical.

From the shoe to the spine

Pressure on a nerve matters.

A common cause of pain is pressure or irritation on a nerve. When you take a pebble out of your shoe, the pain disappears because the pressure on the nerve is gone.

Your nerves do much more than carry pain. They let you see, hear, move your arm, breathe and digest. Pressure on a nerve doesn’t always hurt; sometimes it simply means a part of you doesn’t work as well as it should.

Chiropractic care works on the physical side: finding where joints of the spine aren’t moving well, and relieving the pressure and irritation around them, so your body can get back to doing what it does best.
